ntsb investigators are taking the pipe to washington d.c. where it will be reconnected to sections removed from the crater. the state public utility commission has ordered pg&e to step up investigations of the pipeline system statewide. this morning at 10:00 the owners of 48 red-tagged homes deemed unsafe will get further instructions. >> anyone who might have information or video that could help the investigation with the reported problems in the days before the explosion. for the latest jenelle live in san bruno. >> that's right, kristen. if you smelled anything prior to last thursday's explosion or if you have any amateur video of the explosion itself, they want it. meanwhile the california public utilities commission has ordered pg&e to inspect all its natural gas lines. according to reports pg&e has over 5,000 miles of gas line.

the 20 foot section of pipe launched 100 feet from the explosion site is being shipped to washington d.c. for analysis as well as other parts of the i pipeline. they want to see if there's torn metal in the weld of the pipeline. also a recent repair of the sewage pipe that ran next to the natural gas line. >> that will be one of the things we will look at in terms of the maintenance and repair of the sewer pipes since it's in the immediate vicinity of this gas pipe. >> again, investigators are asking for the public's help. they want three specific things, like i mentioned earlier. any amateur video of the explosion. they also want to know if anyone saw dying vegetation around the explosion site. that is also the sign of a possible gas leak. some residents are claiming they smelled gas prior to thursday's tragedy. if you're one of those people, you're asked to call the california public utilities commission. that number is 1-800-789-0550.

pg&e says it has no record of anybody calling prior to thursday's explosion. live in san bruno, i'm jenelle wang, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. pg&e said the pipe ruptured was considered a high consequence area requiring more stringent inspections. it was installed in 1956 and last inspected in march. in 2009 pg&e listed an 8 mile section between livermore and sunol as the highest risk area for pipeline in the bay area. pg&e also has concerns about section of pipe two and a half miles north of the san bruno explosions. it was checked for leaks on friday and none were found. >> pg&e says they received no calls to its service center from people reporting smelling gas leading to the week before thursday's fire. the people who live in that neighborhood tell us they smelled gas and gave anecdotal

accounts. >> from pg&e, when i got up in my house that morning, he was checking something on the floor with some -- something that beeped. >> pg&e says workers do use a tool that beeps to check for leaks, but a spokesman could forgot confirm that any pg&e workers were in the neighborhood before the explosion. pg&e says they're looking into that report. >> dozens of homeowners still can't go back to their houses because they were severely damaged. they hope to find out what's going to happen to them next in a meeting with officials at 10:00 this morning. thomas is live in the san bruno neighborhood. thomas, some people were allowed to go home over the weekend. >> that's exactly right. there's aid few hundred people who are very happy that they were actually able to sleep in their own beds last night and continue to do so. now, there's -- there are still

many people who as you said are still homeless and awaiting some kind of news when they can return home. about 300 people were allowed back in their homes near the crater left behind by thursday's explosion and fire. 85 homes are either still too damaged or completely destroyed. some people were able to returned to their undamaged green tagged homes to stay and finally slept in their own beds after being homeless for three days. others like beverly could only go home to survey the damage, collect her belongings and then -- >> expected to be in tears. i'm very lucky this house is still standing here. >> a total of 377 homes were evacuated after thursday's explosion and fire. there are still 48 red-tagged homes which will obviously not able to be occupied. now, the individuals who own or who live in those red-tagged

homes have a meeting this morning at10:00 at the san bruno senior center. that's 1555 crystal springs road. authorities will be able to tell them there exactly what to expect in the next few days. reporting live in san bruno, i'm thomas roman, abc 7 news. >> thank you. meantime several bay area companies are coming forward to help fire victims. the old navy store at the mall in san bruno held a private shopping event yesterday for families whose homes were lost or damaged. the red cross identified at least 100 families and gave them each a $250 gift card to spend at old navy. charlie's home and rv were in the path of the fireball. >> not gonna be able to go in for i guess a few days anyway if not longer than that. and i had my rv parked along the street in case we had a earthquake or something bad and that went, too. >> people with gift cards can

on a highway. >> the san bruno fire has ignited new concerns in san jose over its firefighting capabilities. only one out of four firefighters live in the city and barely a third even live in santa clara county. the rest live in towns as far as away as chico and south tahoe. one lives in idaho. this means the city can't get timely help from offduty firefighters in a major emergency. some propose new hires live within 50 miles of the city. >> the actor who plays the doctor trying to save his friends and neighbors in the science fiction classic invasion of the body snatchers died. kevin mccarthy started in several roles in his hollywood career but the 1956 sci-fi film, invasion of the body snatchers, he veinly tries to warn residents in the small town of the evil pod people from outerspace quietly taken over everyone at earth.

inspections of pipeline systems statewide. they're taking that ruptured section of pipe to washington d.c. where it will be reassembled to help determine why it broke apart. and the casualty count which fluctuated over the weekend. this morning four deaths confirmed. forensics tests are conducted for remains found in the rubble saturday. four people are still missing down from six after authorities tracked down two people. they are safe and sound. >> you mentioned a big chunk of that pipeline from san bruno is it heading to washington d.c. where scientists will try to reconstruct what happened before, during and after the explosion. jenelle wang is live in san bruno. jenelle, ntsb investigators are also asking for the public's help. >> that's right, eric. i want to mention that 28 foot section, it's on its way to washington d.c. as well as other parts of that pipeline. they wanted to see if there's any failure in the welding or possibly in the torn metal.

that's on its way to washington d.c. right now. meanwhile investigators are asking for three specific things from the public to help them with their investigation. number one, any amateur video of thursday's explosion or just video of that area itself. they want to know more about what the blast site looked like prior to the explosion. also if anyone noticed dying vegetation in the area. that may be a sign of a gas leak and if anyone smelled gas prior to the explosion, they want to know. >> i smelled it. it was once in a while, say three, almost four weeks ago. >> all i can tell you is that i've heard the same rumors. i haven't gotten any confirmation from pg&e that there's been any issues ups there. >> meanwhile the california public utilities commission has ordered pg&e to inspect all of its natural gas lines. according to reports, pg&e has over 5,000 miles of gas line. the state says the utility company should give priority to

the large transmission lines first like the one that ruptured last thursday evening and lines that run under highly populated areas. investigators also tell me they're going to take a look at a sewage line that ran parallel to that natural gas line. it really underwent some repairs and they want to see if that had anything to do with the explosion. live in san bruno, i'm jenelle wang, abc 7 news. >> thanks a lot. it's 5:32. the california public utilities commission is ordering pg&e to inspect all 5,000 miles of its gas pipeline statewide. it's also calling on the utility to explain its procedures for responding to reports of gas leaks. they want pg&e to preserve all records of the work on the gas line that runs through san bruno. an assessment determined a natural gas line running from livermore to sunol is the highest risk pipeline in the bay area. fremont is the second most at

risk. they calculate risk based on the likelihood of a pipe failure and the density of the surrounding area. two of six people previously reported missing have been located. that leaves four people still unaccounted for. that includes three members of the bowllist family. relatives said they fear levon, gregory and william died in the fire. the fourth missing person has not been publicly identified. >> dozens of residents will be waking up in their san bruno home this morning for the first time since last thursday's devastating fire. others with red-tagged homes have not been allowed back and will have to wait until 10:00 to find out what happens next. residents with yellow-tagged homes were only allowed to return to retrieve some belongs. they have to make some repairs before they come back. families whose homes were green tagged spent most of sunday cleaning out spoiled food from the fridge. they're back to stay. >> it's surreal to see that everything's very normal for us in the sense of our home.

but our -- some of our dearest friends are right down the hill and their homes are completely destroyed. >> meantime pg&e went door to door making sure that everyone's gas was turned back on. >> residents of the 37 homes destroyed by the fire were not allowed to return to their properties this past weekend. they've been invited to a briefing this morning at the bruin senior center. that address 1555 crystal springs road right next to san bruno city park and the meeting starts at 10:00 this morning. >> pg&e's parent corporation told federal regulators friday the company's financial stability could be affected by the huge amounts of money expected in damage claims. pg&e says it carries nearly $1 billion in fire insurance but there's concern inside the company that it may not be enough. past pipeline accidents have resulted in pg&e paying damages of up to $200 million, but those occurred in sparsely populated areas. since this disaster resulted in

fatalities in a highly populated area, it could drive the liability much higher. pg&e's corporate stock price will be closely watched this morning. it opens at $44.21 a share after plunging more than $4 or 8% on friday. >> san bruno's schools that were closed friday because of the explosion and fire will reopen this morning. the post office says delivery service should resume in the neighborhoods considered safe by firefighters. also the peninsula humane society is still trying to reunite some lost pets with the their san bruno owners. more than two dozen dogs and cats were brought to the spca shelter in san mateo after the fire. many have been returned to their owners. >> it's 5:35. the san francisco giants will dedicate their next home game tomorrow night to the victims of the san bruno fire, and $3 from every ticket sold will be donated to the glenview district

fund. they are in a tie for the first place after winning yesterday. the dodgers visit at&t park tomorrow night. the dodgers will honor the victims in a pregame ceremony and collect donations from fans attending the game. the red cross says it's not accepting anymore clothing, blankets or similar donations for the fire victims. it recommends items be dropped off now at the salvation army or good will. if you'd like to help the fire victims through the red cross, the best way is make a cash donation online or by phone. >> it's 5:36. let's check with mike and see what the weather holds for us today. >> yes. cool out there this morning. >> yes. some parts absolutely. the parts that didn't quite feel much of the cooling yesterday. in fact, let's take a look at these temperatures and i'll show you the changes from yesterday morning. 49 los gatos. the hills around los gatos a little cooler. mid to upper 50s most other neighborhoods. the areas that cooled yesterday, they're a little warmer this morning from mountain view at
